Tool Overview

Urges can feel intense and immediate, but they usually change over time. The DENTS tool provides five practical strategies to help you pause, reduce the power of an urge, and choose what to do next.

DENTS stands for:

  • Deny or Delay: Remind yourself that the urge will pass. Delay acting on it, even if you need to take it one moment at a time.
  • Escape: Move away from places, people, conversations, or situations that are increasing the urge.
  • Neutralise: Notice the urge without treating it as an instruction. You can challenge it, observe it build and fade, or use comforting SMART activities.
  • Tasks: Give yourself something absorbing to do, such as calling someone, counting, reciting, walking, or completing another practical activity.
  • Swap: Replace unhelpful self-talk with a more balanced thought and choose a healthy activity that helps clear your mind.

This tool helps you respond to urges with practical choices. It is not about eliminating urges completely, but about building a sustainable way to manage them.

How To Use This Tool

When an urge appears, work through the DENTS strategies and choose the ones that are most useful for you.

  • Deny or Delay: How long do your urges usually last if you do not act on them? How intense do they become before they fade?
  • Escape: What triggers can you move away from? How can you reduce their influence?
  • Neutralise: What helps you sit with an urge until it passes? What words, thoughts, or SMART activities help you feel more comfortable?
  • Tasks: Which activities absorb your attention enough to help you manage the urge?
  • Swap: What positive thoughts can replace negative ones during an urge? Which healthy activities help clear your mind?

Before you need the tool, write down your own strategies for each part of DENTS. Keep the list somewhere easy to find so you can use it when an urge occurs.
