SMART Recovery for Individuals with Addictions
Discover “The Power of Choice” in Recovery
If you want to address any addiction or harmful habit, SMART Recovery Ireland can help. Major changes can be overwhelming. SMART’s practical tools and social supports are proven effective to support and sustain successful long-term life change.
Harmful habits include “substance” addictions (to alcohol and other drugs), as well as “activity” addictions (to behaviors like sex, relationships, spending, gambling, eating, exercise, and self-injury). No matter what your harmful habit is, SMART can help you change it.
SMART is not just any peer lead mutual-support program, The science-based approach emphasises self-empowerment and self-reliance.
There’s no lifetime commitment; you decide when the time is right to move on. You choose how to personalise your own plan for successful change. SMART can be used both as a stand-alone program or in combination with other recovery paths. SMART Recovery Ireland recognises the only one who can truly become the expert on your recovery is you.
SMART and Other Recovery Groups
SMART Recovery believes that each individual must find their own path to recovery. For some, that path may include 12-step programs or other self-empowering groups. Although the SMART approach differs from those of other organisations, it does not exclude them. Participants make their own choices and create their own paths to their own Recovery.
SMART Recovery Tools
A variety of tools and techniques are employed for each of SMART’s 4 Points, including the Cost/Benefit Analysis; Change Plan Worksheet; Hierarchy of Values; ABCs of Rational-Emotive Behavioral Therapy (for both urge-coping and emotional upsets); DISARM (Destructive Imagery and Self-talk Awareness and Refusal Method); Brainstorming; and Role-playing/Rehearsing.
